  • Care Guide | Sustainable Luxury Jewellery from Switzerland | AMBER-WIND

Follow AMBER WIND advice and you'll have no trouble caring for your jewellery, whether it's a diamond ring, earrings with pearls, or a precious gemstone bracelet. CARE GUIDE JEWELLERY CARE INSTRUCTIONS In addition to the monetary value, many people place high sentimental value on their jewellery. Take good care of your jewellery and it will continue to sparkle for years to come. Follow our advice and you'll have no trouble caring for your jewellery, whether it's a diamond ring, earrings with pearls, or a precious gemstone bracelet. FOLLOW GENERAL CARE A professional should inspect jewellery on a regular basis for damage or wear . If you have any concerns about the condition of your jewellery, contact your local jeweller. Her/him will take great pride in assisting you in keeping your jewellery looking as good as the day you purchased it. Here are a few pointers on how to maintain your jewellery in good condition : Remove your jewellery before engaging in any activity that could scratch, knock, or damage it. If in doubt, remove it and store it safely. Take it off before going to bed . Keep it away from chemicals , particularly chlorine. If it comes into contact with chemicals, immediately rinse it with water . Before you put on your jewellery, take a bath/shower and do not apply any lotions or perfumes . Organic gemstones, such as pearls and opals, are especially vulnerable to acids and even perspiration . Store it separately , preferably in a soft-lined box or case, to prevent your favourite pieces from tangling, rubbing, or scratching one another. Pearls, in particular, should be stored separately because hard gemstones can scratch them. To avoid tangling, keep chains and necklaces fastened when storing. Remove your jewellery while cooking or cleaning . When storing jewellery, keep it away from direct sunlight , extreme heat , and damp conditions . SHOP ALL ORGANIC GEMS CLEANING Organic gemstones such as pearl , opal, coral and amber have different chemical compositions than mineral gemstones such as sapphires and diamonds. As a result, they require additional forms of care . Most organic gemstones are much softer than mineral gemstones and are easily scratched and damaged if not properly cared for . They are vulnerable to acids and many chemicals found in cleaning products due to their chemical makeup. This brief guide should assist you in avoiding damage to your pearl, opal, coral and amber jewellery. CLEANING OF GEMSTONES Gemstones are purchased for their glimmer and colour, so it's critical to keep them looking their best . However, it is critical to understand the type of gem you are cleaning and how to restore it to its former glory . Many coloured gemstones have been enhanced in appearance by treatment. Some cleaning products may react negatively with these treatments, causing damage to the jewellery. If you are unsure, take your jewellery to a jeweller. Although a gemstone may appear to be resistant to heat, many are not. When cleaning, always use warm water rather than hot or boiling water. If gemstones are aggressively cleaned, inclusions within them can weaken their structure. Mechanical cleaning, such as steam and ultrasonic cleaning, can harm gemstones that have been oiled to improve colour, such as emeralds . Cleaning nearly all coloured gemstones with warm water , a few drops of dishwashing liquid , and a soft brush will be enough . Avoid using hard or rigid brushes. Because of the size and flexibility of the head, a toothbrush is usually an excellent tool. It is critical to use a toothbrush that is labelled as soft or extra-soft. PEARL, OPAL, CORAL AND AMBER CLEANING Avoid immersing the gemstones in water. Instead, dampen a soft cloth with warm water and gently rub each stone . Pulling the stones through the cloth risks stretching or damaging the string. If some of the gemstones still have stubborn dirt on them, a soft brush should help remove it. Take your time and go slowly . Using a lint-free cloth, dry the gemstones . Excess moisture can collect in drill holes and around knots, causing discoloration. This should be removed with a hard blow with the breath or by dabbing with a cloth. To remove moisture, do not use a hairdryer because the heat will damage the stones . Never use steam, boiling, or ultrasonic cleaning tools because they will permanently damage the gems . CONTACT US CLEANING OF DIAMONDS Diamonds , despite being the hardest naturally occurring substance on Earth, require special care . They are hard, but due to their directional hardness, they can still fracture and be scratched by other diamonds . Finger oil and general dust and grime can quickly adhere to the diamond surface and reduce its brilliance. Handle your diamonds with care and store them separately from other jewellery to avoid scratching other pieces, including diamond jewellery. Keeping the diamonds in small plastic bags or a fabric-lined boxes will help to reduce damage, wear, and dirt buildup. Clean the diamond on a regular basis . Soak in a degreasing solution in warm water (a couple of drops of washing-up liquid will be enough). Brush gently with a soft, clean toothbrush before wiping dry with a lint-free cloth. Take extra care with the stone's setting, as it may be delicate. Bleaches and other harsh abrasives should be avoided. This has the potential to damage the precious metal in which the diamond is set. GOLD CLEANING It is not uncommon for gold jewellery to lose its lustre quickly . Fingerprints and daily dirt build up can quickly dull even the most gleaming gold. Fortunately, we have some pointers to help you restore its lustre . If the gold jewellery contains gemstones or pearls , please be extra cautious when cleaning it . Check out the rest of the guide to learn how to clean the individual gems without damaging the jewellery. A cleaning solution designed specifically for jewellery is a safe bet but make certain that any solution you use is intended for the correct precious metal or gemstone. If in doubt, the following steps should be followed: To a lukewarm bowl of water , add a few drops of washing up liquid (or another mild degreasing solution). Extreme temperature changes may cause damage to the jewellery, so avoid immersing it in hot or ice-cold water. Soak the jewellery for ten minutes to loosen any dirt build up. Clean gently with a soft-bristled brush, such as an old toothbrush. Make sure to clean the entire piece of jewellery and get into hard-to-reach places and be extra cautious when cleaning delicate parts of the jewellery (such as a stone's setting). Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue and dirt remnants. Allow to air dry or gently dry with a lint-free cloth . Gold is a very soft metal that is easily scratched. Keep this in mind while cleaning and drying and be as gentle as possible .

  • Recycled gold | Sustainable Luxury Jewellery from Switzerland | AMBER-WIND

AMBER-WIND has pledged to use only 100% recycled 18K solid gold. Recycling gold and precious metals is a less expensive and more sustainable way to create new jewellery. Creating responsible jewelry is an ongoing journey, we made a commitment to use only fairtrade certified gold by 2030. RECYCLED GOLD What exactly is recycled gold? Recycled gold is made from consumer products, waste products, unused metal, and other gold-based items. When these are no longer in use, they are sold to be melted down. Recycling gold and precious metals is a less expensive and more sustainable way to create new jewellery. Is recycled gold more ethical and environmentally friendly? Recycled gold is usually considered as far more ethical and sustainable than regular gold . Gold can be recycled without losing quality, allowing it to be reused multiple times , making it a far more sustainable solution than mining for new alloys. Furthermore, most of the gold has already been mined, with only a few mining regions remaining. Gold mining can have negative consequences such as water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, but the beauty is that we can avoid mining for new materials thanks to recycled gold. How is gold recycled? The gold is melted and refined until it is pure. The gold can also be separated from any other alloys with which it may have been mixed, which aids in determining the true karat value of the gold. Is recycled gold of good quality? Gold has the advantage of being infinitely recyclable without losing its integrity , and yes, recycled gold is considered good quality gold ! The process of melting and recycling gold has no negative impact on its quality . When gold is melted down, it is refined and purified, giving it the same purity as newly mined gold. FAQ About Recycled Gold AMBER-WIND has pledged to use only 100% recycled 18K solid gold How pure is recycled gold? The purity of gold has not changed since the day it was mined. Recycling gold uses fewer chemicals and causes less environmental damage than mining new gold from the ground. Unlike other metals, gold does not oxidize or corrode. Is recycled gold the same as gold? Recycled gold is gold that has been melted down, refined, cast again, and made into a new piece of jewellery. Gold has the advantage of being infinitely recyclable ; it can be melted down millions of times without losing its integrity . Recycling gold requires fewer chemicals and electricity than mining new gold. In fact, mercury and cyanide pollution from gold mining can pollute waterways and land. In case you didn't know, these are toxic chemicals that affect aquatic ecosystems and the health of nearby communities. What are the three biggest benefits of recycled gold? 1. Less harmful to the environment . Gold mining requires the discovery of new sources of gold that are naturally formed; however, these sources are depleting, and the environment is being destroyed in the pursuit of new gold. Recycling gold requires fewer chemicals and electricity than mining new gold. Furthermore, recycling existing products reduces the need to source new gold. 2. Some untrustworthy retailers obtain their gold from unethical sources, whereas recycled gold is produced from existing materials and products, providing peace of mind that no additional harm is being imposed on the environment . 3. If you become bored with an old design and want to recycle your jewellery, you can do so again. Recycled gold can be melted down and recycled endlessly without losing its value or purity . MORE ABOUT DESIGN Which gold is most ethical? Fairtrade Certified Gold is the world's first independent ethical gold certification system. Purchasing Fairtrade Gold jewelry means you are assisting small-scale miners in receiving a fair wage for their efforts, as well as protecting the environment and improving the lives of themselves and their communities. Traceability, responsible mining, fairer trade conditions, and community support all come at a cost: fair mined gold costs more than conventional and recycled gold. It typically costs between 10% and 20% more than traditional gold. Is the gold used by AMBER-WIND Fairtrade? Not yet, we currently only use recycled gold. AMBER-WIND has committed to using fairtrade gold by 2030. As members of the jewelry industry, we face numerous challenges. Starting with supply chain traceability, which is extremely difficult because the raw materials we use (metals and gemstones) come from all over the world and pass through multiple hands before becoming a piece of jewelry. Creating responsible jewelry is an ongoing journey in which we will strive to do better for workers, society, and the environment. As a result, we made a commitment to use only fairtrade certified gold by 2030. Let's explore gold quality in more detail after discussing recycled gold. AMBER-WIND uses 100% recycled 18K solid gold in 3 colours: YELLOW, WHITE and ROSE . What exactly does 18K (carat) gold mean? K or 'Carat' is the purity of gold alloyed with other metals. 24K (carat) gold is pure gold that contains no other metals. Lower carat number contain less gold; 18K gold contains 75% gold and 25% other metals , most commonly copper or silver (different alloys used result in different final 18K gold colours). The purest, but also the most delicate metal is 24K gold. 22K has a lower purity but is more durable than 24K gold. 18K gold - 75% pure is more durable than the other types . 14K gold is 58% pure on average, but it is more durable than 18K gold. 18K gold with 750 gold stamp All AMBER-WIND jewellery will have the 750 gold hallmark . The 750 gold stamp indicates that the metal is 75% gold and 25% other metal(s). A 750 gold stamp is one of the internationally recognized fineness marks. Fineness is a numerical representation of an alloy's gold content in parts per thousand. 'Carat' is an alternative purity measurement. Gold carat shows an alloy's gold content in parts per 24. What is the difference between yellow, white and rose gold? Pure gold has a distinct yellow colour, as we all know. Pure gold, on the other hand, is rarely used in jewellery because it is too soft. As a result, it is almost always combined with other metals to form alloys. As previously stated, 24 karat gold is 100% pure gold, whereas 18K gold contains 75% gold and 25% other metals . Gold can change colour depending on the 'other' metals added. The most popular gold jewellery colours are yellow, white and rose . Copper, silver, nickel, palladium, and zinc are among the 'other' metals mixed with gold. To enhance the colour, a metal plating may be applied. VISIT SHOP FAQ About 18K Gold Is there a value difference between different gold colours? Yellow, white and rose gold all contain the same percentage of pure gold and thus have the same monetary value . How is 18K YELLOW gold made? Silver, copper, and zinc are the most common metals used (together with pure gold) to make yellow gold. Yellow gold is the closest colour match to pure gold. It is recommended to polish yellow gold jewellery on a regular basis to preserve its beauty and remove scratches. How is 18K WHITE gold made? White gold is typically made by combining pure gold with nickel, palladium, and silver. Its properties vary greatly depending on the metals and proportions used in the mixture. The finished product, however, retains a slight yellowish tint. As a result, most white gold jewellery is rhodium plated. Many people mix up the colour of rhodium with the colour of white gold. The metal that gives white gold its colour is rhodium. Not only that, but it also makes white gold more durable by adding a protective layer to the softer gold alloy. Because rhodium plating wears off over time, it is recommended that you re-plate your white gold jewellery with rhodium from time to time. How is 18K ROSE gold made? Rose gold is made from a combination of pure gold and copper. It is also known as ‘pink’ or ‘red’ gold at times. The difference between red, rose, and pink gold is the copper content: the higher the copper content, the stronger the red coloration. It is recommended to polish rose gold jewellery on a regular basis to maintain its beauty and remove scratches. How do you choose a gold colour? Colour is usually chosen based on trends and personal preference . Combining two or three different gold colours in one piece of jewellery is also possible. These pieces of jewellery are known as two-tone, three-tone, or multi-coloured. However, there are some tricks in gold colour and gemstone combination in jewellery design that help to significantly enhance the beauty of the gemstones and diamonds when selecting the 'correct' gold colour for the jewellery setting. • Gemstones | Sustainable Luxury Jewellery from Switzerland | AMBER-WIND

AMBER-WIND has pledged to use only NATURAL COLOURED GEMSTONES and DIAMONDS. We do not work with synthetic gem material and synthetic diamonds. AMBER-WIND jewellery bears a responsibility mark (registered in Switzerland), which attests to the jewellery’s composition accuracy. GEMSTONES What exactly is a natural gemstone? Gemstones are a natural product of the Earth . Some, such as diamond and zircon, were formed deep within the earth and brought to the surface by molten rock explosions. Many, such as topaz, tourmaline, and aquamarine, crystallised slowly from hot fluids and gases as they cooled and solidified deep beneath the Earth's surface. A natural gemstone is a mineral, stone, or organic substance that can be cut, carved, and polished for use in jewellery or other ornaments. Some gemstones are considered precious because of their beauty, durability, and rarity, whereas others are called semiprecious because they only have one or two of these characteristics. AMBER-WIND has pledged to use only NATURAL COLOURED GEMSTONES and DIAMONDS. We do not work with synthetic gem material and synthetic diamonds. GEMSTONE CERTIFICATES What about gemstone certificates? Both natural and synthetic gemstones can be evaluated by reputable labs such as the GIA , Gübelin Gem Lab , and others to ensure the quality and origin of your gemstone. AMBER-WIND will include a Gübelin's Gem Lab certificate in a price offer for rarer and more valuable coloured gemstones , such as: ≥ 4 ct weight Emeralds, Sapphires, Rubies, bigger faceted Tourmalines, Imperial Topazes, ≥ 10 ct weight Aquamarines, ≥ 20 ct weight Opals. For smaller and less valuable natural gemstones , Gem Lab Certification on gemstone authenticity is only available upon request and for an additional fee (starting from CHF 700 ). Please contact us if you require a certificate or have any questions about the gemstones and their properties. We will gladly provide you with information and assist you in selecting the best gemstone for your free-spirited, colourful soul. NATURAL VS MAN-MADE Which is the difference between natural and man-made gemstones and diamonds? Natural gems are mined , whereas synthetic (or man-made) gems and diamonds are created in laboratories . Natural gemstones that have formed in the earth over millions of years almost always have flaws, colour zoning, or inclusions . The primary distinction between synthetic and natural gemstones is that one was created in nature by the earth over millions of years , whereas the other was grown in a laboratory by humans over the course of a few days to a year . What's more, technically, synthetic gemstones are still gemstones and not imitations. A synthetic Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, or Sapphire is still a Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphire because its chemical composition and chemical structure are identical to natural gemstones. However, because synthetic gemstones are grown under controlled conditions, the manufacturer can ensure the best colour and clarity. Synthetic gemstones are more likely to have rich and vivid colours and be free of inclusions than most natural gemstones. What's the difference in price between natural and synthetic gemstones? Synthetic gemstones are approximately 30% to 40% less expensive than natural gemstones of the same type, size, and cut. When a beautiful gemstone comes with a deal that appears to be too good to be true, it is most likely a synthetic gemstone. How can you be sure that the gemstones you buy from this shop are natural? It is critical for a buyer to understand whether the gemstones they are purchasing are natural or synthetic. AMBER-WIND jewellery bears a responsibility mark (registered in Switzerland), which attests to the jewellery’s accuracy. Furthermore, each piece of jewellery comes with a certificate of authenticity . We only work with certified manufacturers and guarantee that the gemstones are not only natural and as described in the product description , but that they are also responsibly sourced from conflict-free areas (in accordance with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas ). AMBER-WIND jewellery bears a responsibility mark (registered in Switzerland), which attests to the jewellery’s composition accuracy.
